Book Review: The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown

Hey there!
Today I have a book review for you guys! I just lately read The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown once again, I had already read it, and it made me want to do a book review :) And since I have to give a talk about this book in my German class anyway, this is a good opportunity to practice :D But of course my German talk will be a bit more matter-of-fact like, not as much of my own opinion ;) But let's get this review started!
Dan Brown's books are always a mix between a thriller and an informative book, and it's this mix I like so much! This one, The Lost Symbol, is the third one with the main character Robert Langdon, who is also the hero of Illuminati Angels&Demons and Sakrileg The DaVinci Code. But you don't have to have read the other 2 books to understand this one, there are almost no links between them.
The Lost Symbol has a wide range of topics, the main ones including symbols, Freemasons and noetic sciences. The story is located in Washington D.C., and has quite a lot to do with the city itself.
The book is not written out of one perspective, but there are always scene switches between different persons. That makes it a bit more easy to understand, but you do have to think about who is who.
It starts with a intriguing scene of a ceremony, and then switches to Robert Langdon, who is on his way to Washington D.C. where he thinks he's supposed to give a lecture, but then he's confronted with horrible things, a secret he's forced to uncover and a terrifying stranger who is behind all of this. He has to help his friend, and with his friend's sister, he's experiencing a lot of thrilling and interesting things.
I'm gonna stop trying to describe the content here, because I know I suck at this. It's just so hard to summarize this book, because it contains so many things that you all need to mention. So let's get a bit away from the content and talk about the book itself.
The Lost Symbol contains a lot information about all kinds of topics. I find that when I read a Dan Brown novel, I always learn something. Sure, that makes it not 100% easy to read, but that's really no big problem. Because of all of these facts, it can't be read too quickly. There are a lot of things in it that need to be thought about, or are at least meant to be thought about, and that way it's not the easiest pleasure read. But that doesn't make it boring! It is very thrilling, full of suspense, and you definitely want to go on reading. It's a page turner, but I don't think you could be able to finish this in one day. That would be crazy!
What I found especially interesting are the noetic sciences, which really exist. This topic is so interesting, and if you don't know anything about it, you'll have to catch up with it.
As is clarified in the beginning of the book, all organisations really exist, all ceremonies are authentic and all facts are true. I find it amazing that Dan Brown can think of a story like this and still stay true to the truth (haha, what a expression, can you actually say that?).
I highly recommend this book, especially if you want to learn something and still have a nice entertainment.
Did anyone of you read this book, or any other Dan Brown book?
Talk to you soon!
xoxo, Misch

  1. I actually started reading this but then for some reason started reading something else and forgot about it entirely. I might resume reading this now that I have my reader.

  4. The novel is action-packed and includes very interesting topics such as the government, the Illuminati and national symbols. I read this book in four days. For those that have read the other two Robert Langdon books, this is definitely for you. For those that enjoy Dan Brown's novels, this book is also for you. You will not regret spending the time to read this.
